"First Contact"
In line with his recent fascination for the futuristic, Davood Roostaei embraces and blends concepts of cultural origins with First Contact 2021; the title referring to the meeting of two cultures previously unaware of one another, as well as the concept of extraterrestrial life. The central motif is that of an Indigenous man in headdress - a symbol of strength, bravery, and honor. Roostaei commonly includes dancing silhouettes in his works, often representing time, and in this case, honouring traditional Indigenous dancers. This piece is illustrative of Roostaei’s artistic lens and penchant for intertwining a variety of disparate timelines and topics together to evoke the viewer’s reflection and participation in the derivation of meaning.
