Artwork Description

In Burgeoning Skies, Katherine van Kampen evokes a moment of quiet emergence beneath a heavy sky. Vast, shifting clouds fill the composition, layered in deep blues and soft greys, suggesting uncertainty and emotional weight.

Across the horizon, a luminous field of yellow breaks through the darkness. For the artist, this yellow signifies hope—subtle yet unwavering—forming even before the storm has fully passed. Rather than depicting a literal landscape, the painting reflects an inner state, where light begins to rise through stillness and endurance.

Through softened transitions and atmospheric depth, the work speaks to renewal in progress: calm, restrained, and quietly powerful.

Artist Biography

Katherine van Kampen grew up in Vancouver, surrounded by the beauty of nature alongside the bustling city. The deep blue ocean, changing skies, and blooming cherry blossoms inspired my art, which captures the gentle persistence of human nature and the dream-like qualities of the world around us. Katherine van Kampen's musical background as a singer and pianist influences her painting, as she creates a colourful song on canvas with each stroke of her brush.

Katherine van Kampen's musical background as a singer and pianist influences her painting, as she creates a colourful song on canvas with each stroke of her brush.

Music and visual art have always been intertwined in her work, as they were both highly valued in her upbringing. Katherine van Kampen pursued a career in opera after earning her Master of Music Degree from the University of British Columbia and had the honour of performing worldwide. Now, she is fully committed to expressing her passion for visual art. Her experiences as an opera singer still influence her painting, as she aims to bring a sense of positivity and tranquillity to her art. Her time in Prague, in particular, inspired her with its soft atmosphere and blended colours, and she hopes to transport viewers to a similarly peaceful place with her artwork.
