Artwork Description

The Reality

Rich color and expressive brushwork bring this complex interior scene into vivid psychological presence. Multiple figures inhabit a layered domestic environment where objects, memory, and perception intertwine. Fragmented space and symbolic elements create an atmosphere that feels both intimate and unsettling, suggesting the coexistence of observation, experience, and reflection.

The composition moves between narrative suggestion and emotional abstraction, allowing gesture, color, and spatial tension to shape meaning. Both theatrical and contemplative, the work examines lived experience as constructed, perceived, and continuously reinterpreted — revealing reality not as fixed, but as layered and evolving.

Hamlet Hovakimyan is a Vancouver-based professional fine artist.

Hamlet was born and educated in the small village of Karbi in mountainous Armenia. He established an early interest in art while growing up. He attended an art school every day for almost his entire school years, eventually leading him to the Yerevan State College of Fine Arts after Panos Terlemezyan, Armenia.

While at art college from 2003 to 2011, Hamlet developed his passion for painting and his peculiar style further. He learned and polished his skills to use a variety of mediums, including oil colours, acrylic, watercolours, tempera, charcoal and pastels. He also acquired skills to do sculpting in a few mediums. His influences have been the works of cubist and impressionist artists of the early 20th century, and his favourite artists are Pablo Picasso, Vincent Van Gogh and Matis.

Hamlet’s works are full of breathtaking colours and creative compositions. His works reflect his self-expression, fantasy, and emotions, as well as his extraordinary perception of the world around him. His pictures contain elements of his life challenges as an artist and as an immigrant with lots of hardships in this new country and new environment. But mostly, they communicate his love towards humanity, women and life.

Hamlet has exhibited his work not only in Armenia but also in Canada. His preferred medium of painting is oil colours on canvas.

Currently, Hamlet lives and works in the city of Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada.
