David Hovan is an award-winning multidisciplinary artist with a career that spans over forty years. David Hovan is the grandson of survivors of the Armenian genocide who were able to escape to Beirut, Lebanon where he was born. His mother, a watercolorist in the style of Cezanne and his father a leather artisan encouraged David to pursue a career in the arts at a very early age.

After completing his Bachelor of Arts degree and working as an actor in local theatres, David won a prestigious art scholarship to pursue graduate studies in the United States. While in the United States he graduated with a Master of Fine Arts degree from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas and continued his exploration of the arts with post graduate doctoral research in art theory and criticism at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign. After moving to Canada and becoming a Canadian citizen he continued performing in professional theatres across the country.

From theatre, he transitioned to film and television performance which inspired him to write, direct and produce his own work. David has since distinguished himself with many awards as an independent filmmaker in cinema and video arts. He was subsequently hired as a senior executive at Brightlight Pictures in Vancouver, British Columbia to be part of the strategic decision making team.

Eventually David shifted his multidisciplinary artistic expression to fine art by further independent studies in the visual arts at Emily Carr University of Art + Design as well as intensive private studio mentorship and practice in Vancouver, BC. David lives and works in Vancouver on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh Nations where he maintains a full time professional studio practice.

His abstract works are held in private collections across Canada and internationally.
