Artwork Description

Description: A rooster stares straight ahead, its body forming a stable pyramid-like shape. The neck and shoulders are broad, the torso solid and powerful. The simplified form radiates strength and intention, implying accumulated power and contemplative depth. Interpretation: The title “Grand Gaze” refers not to gender, but to a majestic and restrained stance of life. The rooster symbolizes composure and foresight—he is both the observer and the visionary. This work expresses a quiet masculine strength. Like the artist’s other works such as Leap of the Rabbit and Swimming the Sky, ordinary creatures are imbued with extraordinary energy and wisdom. Gao Feng graduated from the Sculpture Department of Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in 1996 and obtained his Master of Fine Arts (MFA) from the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University in 2009. Since 2002, he has been teaching in the Sculpture Department at the College of Fine Arts, Shenyang University. He currently lives and works between Vancouver and Shenyang.

Rooted in traditional Chinese culture, Gao Feng’s sculptural language actively engages with contemporary contexts and global perspectives. Guided by the artistic principle of “encountering the ancients, the West, the divine, and the people,” his works—crafted in bronze, paper, and mixed media—combine historical depth with modern resonance. His art explores themes such as cultural heritage, individual awakening, collective memory, and the contrasts between Eastern and Western aesthetics. His representative works include Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism, A Changed World, Lotus Emerging, Studies on Appropriationism, and Diving in the Sea, Soaring in the Sky.
